  • Our impact

Family Welfare Foundation impact is reflected in the lived experiences of women, adolescent girls and young people who have gained knowledge, confidence, protection, and opportunities through its programs. Across Tanzania, the organization has implemented community-based and policy-focused initiatives that address structural barriers affecting women’s rights, access to healthcare services, education, and economic participation.

The following stories highlight how FWF’s programs are contributing to positive and measurable change in communities.
  • Empowering Adolescent Girls with Knowledge and Voice

5Through the SPEAK OUT project, implemented in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Songwe regions, FWF strengthened awareness among adolescent girls and young women on sexual and reproductive health and rights, including access to safe services and legal protections. The project combined community dialogues, digital engagement and youth-led advocacy to expand knowledge and amplify the voices of young women in policy discussions.

Through this initiative, more than 15,000 adolescent girls and young women accessed online information and advocacy platforms, while 3,000 adolescent girls and 1,000 women from affected households participated in community learning sessions addressing the risks of unsafe abortion and teenage pregnancy.

These engagements helped young women better understand their rights, access available services and participate in community conversations about reproductive health and gender equality.

  • Supporting Women Affected by Tuberculosis and Gender-Based Violence

In Mwanza, Shinyanga, and Simiyu regions, FWF implemented a large-scale gender-responsive health program supported by the Stop TB Partnership. The project addressed the intersecting challenges faced by women affected by tuberculosis, including stigma, gender-based violence, and barriers to healthcare access.

Through collaboration with regional and district health authorities, community health workers conducted over 1,500 household sessions, reaching 5,000 women affected by TB with education on prevention, treatment adherence, human rights, and referral pathways to psychosocial and protection services.

Women who previously faced stigma and limited access to care were able to access treatment, receive support services and regain confidence to participate in their communities.

  • Building a New Generation of Young Women Leaders

FWF has also invested in strengthening leadership and participation among adolescent girls and young women through initiatives such as the East Africa Young Women Leadership and Mentoring Initiative, supported by the Global Fund for Women.

The initiative empowered 3,000 adolescent girls and young women with leadership skills, entrepreneurship knowledge, and awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Through peer mentoring networks and safe learning spaces, participants developed confidence to engage in community advocacy and promote gender equality.

Many participants have since emerged as youth advocates who mobilize their peers, organize awareness campaigns and challenge harmful gender norms within their communities.

  • Promoting Girls’ Rights to Education

FWF has played an active role in advocating for the protection of girls’ education rights, particularly for pregnant schoolgirls and adolescent mothers. Through national workshops and multi-stakeholder consultations, the organization convened policymakers, educators, civil society organizations and young women to address barriers to education retention and re-entry.

These advocacy efforts engaged over 1,800 participants, including adolescent girls, education stakeholders and media representatives. The initiative helped raise awareness of the long-term social and economic consequences of denying education to pregnant girls and contributed to strengthened public dialogue on inclusive education policies.

As a result, stakeholders have increasingly recognized the importance of protecting girls right to education and ensuring supportive reintegration pathways for adolescent mothers.

  • Creating Safer Digital Spaces for Women

FWF has also addressed emerging threats affecting women and girls in digital environments. Through a national conference on women’s human rights violations in social media and digital platforms, the organization brought together women’s rights organizations, policymakers, media representatives, and survivors of online harassment.

The dialogue increased national awareness about online gender-based violence and highlighted the need for stronger policies and accountability mechanisms to protect women and girls in digital spaces.

The initiative contributed to expanding public recognition of online harassment as a serious human rights issue and strengthened advocacy for safer digital participation.

  • Strengthening Communities and Systems

Across all its programs, FWF works closely with communities, government institutions, and civil society partners to strengthen systems that protect women and girls. Through community engagement, advocacy, and integrated health and protection programs, FWF continues to support women and young people in building safer, healthier, and more resilient communities.

These stories represent only a portion of the impact achieved through FWF work. By empowering women and girls with knowledge, leadership opportunities and access to essential services, the organization contributes to sustainable social change and inclusive development across Tanzania.
